We are excited to announce our public speaking workshop! Preston Wong, a student at Brooks School in North Andover, and Caroline Bae, a student at The Winsor School in Boston, are holding a speech workshop for young students of the ages 8-12 (age range can be flexible), for those who want to improve their public speaking skills.
Both leaders were participants in their middle school's speech programs and enjoyed competing in state-wide tournaments. They strongly advocate for the importance of public speaking, which remains in their daily lives from presentations in school to theatre productions.
In this course, students will develop public speaking skills through fun and interactive activities such as reader’s theatre, tongue twister races, impromptu sales pitches, and pretend improv interviews. Although this form of “speech” might not seem like the typical TED talk or presidential statement, it will introduce the idea of public speaking to students and help them gain confidence and verbal capability that will ultimately prepare them for the podium. Rather than writing a full-length speech, students will develop vital speaking skills that will prove useful in everyday life.
Ideally, the workshop would be a session with two meetings and have roughly five students. Right now, the dates are to be determined and will be proposed based on popular demand through the sign-up responses. Regardless, the tentative time is 4:00 - 5:00 pm EST, although it can be adjusted depending on popular needs. The dates proposed are options and can be voted for during signups.
