Welcome to our third annual Creative Writing Workshop! This workshop is aimed towards aspiring creative writers (grades 8-10) with some prior experience who are seeking to bring their work to the next level. Through a combination of lecture-style instruction and collaborative workshopping sessions, we will cover both the basics of crafting a compelling piece, as well as delve into the specifics of using literary modes, language, and structure, to experiment with and push our creative boundaries. Students will have the chance to receive personalized feedback and revision on their writing and learn about the revision process. Additionally, we will touch upon tips for submitting to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and writing programs such as the Iowa Young Writers’ Studio depending on interest. Although the workshop will focus on prose writing (fiction and creative nonfiction), writers of all genres are welcome to come and learn!

*Note: In preparation for the group workshopping sessions, it is highly suggested that each student come prepared with 1-2 pieces that they feel comfortable sharing with the group for revision.

The tentative time is 1:30 - 3:00 pm EST, although it can be adjusted depending on popular need

Session 1 (7/17): 

• Introduction to creative writing 
• Introduction to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and other competitions
• What makes a good creative writing topic?
• Case study 1: writing from a generic prompt
• Homework: Pick a topic out of a provided list and outline your ideas

Session 2 (7/24):

• Developing more complex storylines and finding your personal voice
• Case study 2: writing from personal experience
• Case study 3: thinking outside of the box 
• Homework: write a first draft of your piece

Session 3 (7/31):

• More advanced writing techniques and the revision process
• Case study 4: creating a more sophisticated story
• Step-to-step guide on how to submit to writing contests and publications
• Homework: revise your piece

Session 4 (8/7):

• Optional in-person open mic: share your stories with your classmates
• Next steps: getting personalized feedback from the instructor

All sessions will be held on Zoom, with the exception of Session 4, which will be held in-person if possible (remote students will be to participate over Zoom).

Students have the option of registering for individual sessions or all four, although taking all four is highly recommended.
